On February 28, 2003, President Bush issued Homeland Security Presidential Directive-5. HSPD-5 directed the Secretary of Homeland Security to develop and administer a National Incident Management System (NIMS). NIMS provides a consistent nationwide template to enable all government, private-sector, and nongovernmental organizations to work together during domestic incidents.

This course introduces NIMS and takes approximately three hours to complete. It explains the purpose, principles, key components and benefits of NIMS. The course also contains "Planning Activity" screens giving you an opportunity to complete some planning tasks during this course. The planning activity screens are printable so that you can use them after you complete the course.

Due to the importance of this new multi-jurisdictional system, this web page has been created to facilitate the training, testing and certification of the "National Incident Management System (NIMS), An Introduction [IS-700]" course. (All training material is from the FEMA website: http://www.training.fema.gov/EMIWeb/IS/IS700.asp)

Instructions: Using the links below, complete the training on NIMS. There are two (2) ways to complete the training. One way is to enroll in the Interactive Web-based Course. This course is available on the FEMA website. The second way is to download the .pdf files. All of the information from the Web-based course is contained in the study guide and course summary. When the training is complete, there is an examination. Download the and take the examination. When the exam is complete, submit your answers to the FEMA website. This site will ask for your name, SS#, and address. It is from this site that the certification will be issued. The final step is to notify Oxford Fire-EMS that training is complete. This last step is for accounting purposes only. The training is required for all department members, and the requirement is not fulfilled until the FEMA issued certificate is on file at Oxford Fire-EMS. This training has been approved by OEMS for Con-Ed hours. All EMT's also need to contact the EMS Coordinator to sign the roster.
